The Building

The House

A landmark Georgian building on Berkeley Square, restored as a working home for Bristol's business community.

A Storied Address

Berkeley Square, by Thomas Paty.

No.20 stands on Berkeley Square in Clifton — one of the most complete Georgian set-pieces in Bristol, at the top of fashionable Park Street. The square was laid out in the late eighteenth century to designs by Thomas Paty, one of the city's most prominent Architect-Masons.

The building has long been a home for ideas and good company: for many years it housed The University and Literary Club, founded in 1889 as the Literary and Philosophic Club. Its function rooms, on the first and second floors, are reached by a stunning Georgian staircase, top-lit by a magnificent glass cupola.

Today, conscious of the historic qualities of its premises, No.20 carries that tradition forward — extending a warm welcome and professional service to members, guests and visitors alike.
